Short List of Ideas for Age-Group Swim Coaches

Ideas…short list. When I learn more about how to manage this site, I will have an index so that coaches, parents and swimmers can locate information that will result in successful age-group competitive swimming performances.

Drills must be done slowly and perfectly. There is no reason to do drills incorrectly and inelegantly. No reason. We should not permit it. Ask the swimmers to BRING THE DRILL INTO THE STROKE, i.e. if you are practicing the high elbow position in FR during drills, demand that they swim with high elbows during swims.

• Side kick hand lead…FR scull drill…then drop the opposite hip and stroke to the other side; make the hip do the work.

• TRY IM LIKE THIS BK-FLY-BR-FR (MAKES BR A LOT HARDER!)

• Kick on back with hands in prayer position, on water, just above water, farther above water.

• Double-arm back for warm-up and warm-down and as a key BK drill.

• BR-Fly drills with tennis ball between chin and chest immediately followed without the ball.

• Float 5-10-15-or 20 yards from end. On signal swim to a fast, timed finish.

• Swim 25’s of BK-Fly-and/or FR and increase the # of fly kicks underwater off each turn…e.g., in a 100 do 3-4-5 or 5-6-7.

• Kick BF underwater 20 meters…swim into wall on back, flip and kick under water 15 meters!

• Try BK K under for 15 meters then sprint to wall by 25s on x time.

• Fly recovery with pinkie UP and thumb DOWN as a drill to help keep the shoulders and arms low over the water!

• BR pull outs for distance and speed…make yourself longer, thinner, press body together…mark distance and beat it.

• BR…do sets where you start with x number of kicks underwater in a streamlined position.

• Do BR sets of 25s-50’s with triple pull out, strong break out and good tempo to finish.
